Student Capstone Project Demonstrates the Power of Small Acts of Kindness
When researching ideas for a Capstone project at Pardes Jewish Day School, Linda Harari discovered an organization whose mission aligned perfectly with her desire to help those in need: Jewish Free Loan.
As part of the Capstone program, students are challenged to identify a real-world issue and take meaningful action to address it. Wanting to make a difference in the lives of individuals experiencing financial distress and/or homelessness, Linda chose to create hygiene boxes filled with essential personal care items.
Each box contained ten hygiene products and was donated to JFL to help those in our community who are in need. During the planning process, Linda learned that JFL had previously organized similar community service initiatives, making the organization a natural partner for the project. “This project was meaningful to me because I have always felt compassion for people facing hardship,” Harari shared. “Even if I can’t solve homelessness, I wanted to do something that would help people’s lives a little more comfortable.”
Through the experience, an important lesson emerged: small items can have significant impact. Necessities such as soap, toothpaste, and other hygiene products can help individuals maintain self-care and confidence, which can be critical when seeking employment, housing, or other supportive services. These items, when provided as part of this type of project, can also help alleviate the strain on already tight household budgets. The project also highlighted the importance of community involvement. Supporting others not only creates a stronger and more caring environment, but it also encourages others to get involved. Acts of kindness often inspire additional acts of kindness, creating a ripple effect throughout our community.
Reflecting on the experience, Linda concluded that even the smallest actions can make a meaningful difference. “Whether assembling a hygiene box or donating a few dollars to JFL, every contribution has the potential to positively impart someone’s life,” adds Harari. The Capstone project serves as a reminder that compassion, combined with action, can help change lives-one small act at a time.
